South Africa's Mining Charter has been hailed as one of the most progressive industry compliance tools in the world. Most African countries have used this charter as a blueprint for improving conditions in their specific local industries.

The charter compels all mining houses to implement local black ownership strategies, employment equity strategies, skills development programmes, beneficiation of minerals locally and affirmative procurement policies.
